He has long also been an advocate of justice for the Palestinian people. \nThey will speak about their experience\, how they see the situation unfolding\, and what they believe is necessary to bring about an equitable and lasting peace in Israel/Palestine and the Middle East. SUMMARY:UN Summit of the Future
DESCRIPTION:The world is not on track to meet the goals we have already set for ourselves. Nor are we effectively rising to new challenges or opportunities. \nThe United Nations Summit of the Future\, to be held from 22 to 23 September 2024\, will bring world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future. \nThe speed and complexity of developments have outpaced our systems for cooperating and coping. \nThe benefits and opportunities of progress are spread unevenly\, with the majority of people left behind. \nThe risks and threats are also unevenly felt\, disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable. \nThis once-in-a-generation opportunity serves as a moment to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively tackle current challenges as well as those that have emerged in recent years or may yet be over the horizon. \nWe already have the “what” in the form of many existing agreements and commitments\, starting with the UN Charter and including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, the 2030 Agenda\, the Paris Agreement\, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and many others. \nThe Summit of the Future will look at the “how” – how do we cooperate better to deliver on the above aspiration and goals? How do we better meet the needs of the present while also preparing for the challenges of the future? \nThe aim of the Summit is twofold: accelerate efforts to meet our existing international commitments and take concrete steps to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities. \nThis will be achieved through an action-oriented outcome document called the Pact for the Future. \nThe Pact will be negotiated\, and endorsed by countries in the lead-up to and during the Summit in September 2024. \nThe result will be a world – and an international system – that is better prepared to manage the challenges we face now and in the future\, for the sake of all humanity and for future generations.

SUMMARY:Nuclear Weapons still threaten us all TODAY! What can we do about it?
DESCRIPTION:Lauren Muir \nOn Saturday 12th July 2025\, Warwick District UN Association is honoured and delighted to welcome UNA-UK’s Policy & Outreach Officer and support officer for UK All Party Parliamentary Group on UN\, Lauren Muire\, who will address the meeting in person on the subject: \nNuclear Weapons still threaten us all TODAY! What can we do about it? \nThe meeting will be held from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm at the Leamington Spa Baptist Church\, Chandos Street\, Leamington Spa\, CV32 4RN. \nThis will be a hybrid meeting both in-person and on-line. \nJoin Zoom Meeting by following this link. Meeting ID: 876 9872 0938\, Passcode: 178541. \nBACKGROUND\nEighty years after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki\, the threat of nuclear weapons has not gone away – it has evolved. \nThe United Nations & the UN Association have long championed nuclear disarmament\, working to reduce the catastrophic risks these weapons pose to humanity. In today’s increasingly unstable global climate\, marked by open threats\, rising tensions\, and a renewed reliance on nuclear deterrence\, this mission is more urgent than ever. \nJoin us for a special meeting of the Warwick District United Nations Association as we welcome Lauren Muir\, Policy & Outreach Officer at UNA-UK. Lauren leads UNA-UK’s work on nuclear disarmament and supports the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the United Nations. \nLAUREN WILL SPEAK ABOUT\n\nThe current & future nuclear weapons landscape\nUNA-UK’s disarmament work & campaigning strategy\nWhat practical steps we can take – as individuals & communities – to influence UK policy & global attitudes\n\nWHY THIS MATTERS\nAs more countries enhance or expand their nuclear arsenals\, the possibility of use – by design\, miscalculation\, or accident – becomes disturbingly plausible. This is not just a foreign policy issue; it’s an existential challenge! \nA second deeply concerning development is well illustrated by the open threats made by Russia to use nuclear weapons in the conflict it triggered through its unlawful & inhumane invasion of Ukraine. \nABOUT OUR SPEAKER\nLauren joined UNA-UK in 2020 and plays a central role in shaping its nuclear policy work. With a background in Geopolitics & Security\, she brings both academic depth and frontline advocacy experience. Her role connects citizens and campaigners with decision-makers in Parliament. \nMEETING SCHEDULE\nTea/Coffee/ biscuits will be provided. Feel free to bring your own lunch. \n12:15 pm – Church hall open for tea/coffee/biscuits and also for those who will join online Zoom. \n12:30 pm – Meeting starts promptly \n13:45 pm – Meeting close \n14:00 pm – Clear and vacate the hall

SUMMARY:Killer Robots and Lethal Autonomy
DESCRIPTION:On 29 November Warwick District United Nations Association welcomes Alexander Davies from the London School of Economics (LSE) to speak on the topic \nKiller Robots and Lethal Autonomy:\nTowards Multilateral Policy on Autonomous Weapon Systems\nThis will be a hybrid event\, open to both in-person at Leamington Spa Baptist Church\, Chandos Street\, Leamington Spa\, CV32 4RN and online via this link. \nArtificial intelligence and automation are transforming the modern battlefield. The rise of autonomous weapon systems (AWS) — machines capable of selecting and engaging targets without direct human intervention — poses one of the most urgent challenges of our time. Drawing on the latest research and on-the-ground developments in Ukraine — the first major conflict in which AI and autonomous systems are playing a central role — Alexander explores how these technologies are reshaping warfare and international law. \nThe discussion will highlight the growing momentum within the United Nations toward developing multilateral frameworks to regulate or ban lethal autonomous weapons\, alongside analysing the challenges towards regulation and asking questions such as: \n\nHow does AI and autonomous weaponry shape modern warfare and global security?\nIn what ways have the tools of war evolved—and what do those changes mean for ethics\, strategy\, and international law?\nHow can the UN address the growing security risks posed by rapid technological change?\n\nAbout our Speaker \nAlexander J. Davies is a doctoral candidate at LSE’s Department of International Relations. . He coordinates LSE’s Security and Statecraft Research Cluster and previously served as Deputy Editor of Millennium: Journal of International Studies. \nHis research explores how domestic politics shape international security and military alliances. \nAlexander has taught courses at LSE including American Grand Strategy\, International Security\, and From Cyberwar to Killer Robots: Emerging Technology and International Security. Alexander is an Associate Fellow of the British Higher Education Academy and has received five teaching awards for excellence in teaching\, including the LSE Summer School Class Teacher Award in both 2024 and 2025. \nHe holds an MSc in International Relations (with Distinction) from LSE and a BA in Politics and International Relations (First Class) from the University of Nottingham. Beyond academia\, he brings over ten years of experience as the Founder and Director of a UK-based 3D environment design studio.
