SUMMARY:COP28 and OCHA
DESCRIPTION:The 28th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change\, more commonly known as COP28\, is happening in Dubai\, United Arab Emirates from 30 November to 12 December. \nOCHA is taking part in COP28 under the leadership of USG Martin Griffiths. As we head towards the COP\, here are things you should know. \nWhy does climate change matter to humanitarians?\nThe climate crisis is fast becoming the biggest driver of humanitarian need\, hitting the world’s most vulnerable people first\, and worst. There has been an 800 per cent increase in climate-related humanitarian appeals in the last 20 years. Each year\, between a quarter and a third of funds from the Central Emergency Response Fund goes to climate-related disasters. The IFRC estimates that without new and large-scale investments\, the number of people requiring humanitarian assistance due to extreme weather-related events could increase to over 200 million by 2050\, while related response funding requirements could increase to US$20 billion annually by 2030. \nClimate change is a threat multiplier\, making the climate crisis a humanitarian crisis. \nWhat does OCHA want to see achieved at COP28\n\n Close the climate finance gap to build resilience in crisis settings  \n\nOCHA is working with partners to ensure that climate finance leaves no one behind\, especially people in fragile and conflict affected communities. The Health\, Relief\, Recovery and Peace Day at COP 28 is a seminal moment to ensure that climate finance is new and additional to humanitarian finance and builds resilience in communities on the front lines. OCHA is also supporting agreement on a new global Loss and Damage Fund and related funding arrangements. Humanitarian response also needs to be scaled up\, and OCHA is aiming to gather donor support to increase the role of the CERF in responding to the climate crisis\, including through a new CERF Climate Action Account. \n\n Act ahead of disasters to save lives and livelihoods\n\nOCHA aims to make COP 28 a moment where the global approach to climate disasters shifts from reaction to prevention. OCHA is working with humanitarian actors and their funding partners to scale-up and better coordinate anticipatory and early action\, fully fund the Secretary General’s Early Warning for All initiative and ensure that Multilateral Development Banks increase pre-arranged financing. \nOCHA also wants to see commitments to ensure that gender equality and women’s empowerment are at the heart of all responses to the climate emergency. \nWhat is OCHA doing at COP28?\nOCHA is providing a platform to raise the voices of the affected people \nOCHA is coordinating the humanitarian community to increase advocacy around the devastating consequences of climate-related disasters and the imperative to immediately scale-up support to the most vulnerable. This includes establishing the first dedicated ‘Humanitarian Hub’ at CoP 28 – a shared space for events that highlight the impacts and solutions on the front lines. \nThe Hub will host more than 40 events organized with the support of dozens of entities\, including local and international humanitarian partners\, academics\, private sector and governments. \nOCHA is advocating for closing the finance gap   \nOCHA and UN partners have also co-developed with the CoP Presidency a ‘Declaration on Relief\, Recovery and Peace’ and related ‘package of solutions’ which commit finance providers to ensure that no one is left behind\, by accelerating climate action in contexts of fragility\, violence and high humanitarian need. OCHA will also share its package of solutions\, including its plans to scale-up the role of the CERF in climate action. \nOCHA is advocating for scaling up early warning and anticipatory action  \nOCHA is asking for commitments to fully fund the Secretary General’s Early Warning for All initiative\, with priority attached to those crisis settings where no effective early warning exists. OCHA is seeking commitments from humanitarian actors and their funding partners to scaling up and better coordinating anticipatory and early action\, making it the ‘default’ option to all foreseeable climate-related disasters. \nOCHA is working to elevate the voices of affected people for climate action  \nSenegalese singer Oumy Gueye\, aka OMG\, an advocate for humanitarian causes in the Sahel\, will perform and participate in OCHA events in Dubai. OMG will highlight the humanitarian challenges in the Sahel\, including as a result of the climate crisis. \nJoin us at our OCHA-led events\n\nStrengthening Delivery: Aligning development\, humanitarian\, and climate finance. This event is co-organized by IFAD and OCHA. (at SE Room 5\, Blue Zone on 3 Dec\, 11.30 –13:00)\nOfficial opening of Humanitarian Hub(at Humanitarian Hub\, Green Zone on 2 Dec\, 10:30- 11:00)\nScaling up CERF’s role in climate action (at Humanitarian Hub\, Green Zone on 3 Dec\, 15:30- 16:30)\n\nWatch via live stream on OCHA social media platforms. \nOther events to watch\n\nThe 1st Conference for Hosting Countries of World’s Humanitarian Hubs (at Blue Zone on 3 Dec\, 10am)\nAccelerating Climate Action and Finance in Countries and Communities Facing Multifaceted Crises – Launch of the Climate\, Relief\, Recovery and Peace Declaration.(Blue Zone Alwaha Theatre\, Blue Zone on 3 Dec\, 12:00 -13.30)\nTaking Early Action to Scale: A Charter for the Future(at Blue Zone on 3 Dec\, 9:30- 10:30 am)\nDelivering Early Warnings for All (EW 4ALL)(at Green Zone on 3 Dec\, 10:30-12:00)\nHow can the Grand Bargain agenda strengthen humanitarian climate mitigation work and disaster prevention (at Humanitarian Hub\, Green Zone on 4 Dec\, 2pm)\nStrengthening Urban Resilience for a Changing Climate(at Humanitarian Hub\, Green Zone on 6 Dec\, 2pm)\n\nSee all events at the Hub here. \nThe time and venue indicated here are based on the available information and subject to change. SUMMARY:Coventry Lord Mayor’s Peace Lecture 2023
DESCRIPTION:Coventry Lord Mayor’s Peace Lecture 2023 will be held on 10 November in St Mary’s Guildhall during Coventry Peace Festival. \nEntry to venue at 6pm. Event starts at 7pm. \nLessons from the Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda\nMarc J Gwamaka will fly from Rwanda to the UK to deliver Coventry Peace Lecture on 10 November in St Mary’s Guildhall\, bringing with him vast experience of developing programs to fight against genocide. \nWhen we hear the word “genocide” most people think about the Nazi’s attempt to exterminate Jews during the Second World War. But the world does not seem to have learned the lessons of that terrible crime against humanity. Attempted genocides have continued to happen and are still occurring today. \nPerhaps the most well-known occurrence was when up to a million of the Tutsi minority indigenous people of the African country of Rwanda were killed by Hutu militias in 1994\, which was the tragic culmination of the Rwandan Civil War\, which had started in 1990. But there are many more examples. Here are just a few of them. \nActs of genocide were committed against the Yazidi people of Iraq by Daesh in 2014. The Chinese government has committed a series of ongoing human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minorities in Xinjiang that are often characterized as genocide. In 2023 Armenian Americans demonstrated in California against what they called a genocide happening in Nagorno-Karabakh. Several people have accused Israel of gradual genocide in Gaza. \nMarc J Gwamaka has been active in the fight against genocide most of his life. As a teenager in 2007 he and his friends founded Peace and Love Proclaimers\, a dynamic peace-building youth organisation based in Rwanda that aims to inspire young people from around the world and teaches them the underlying principles of hope\, unity\, and social responsibility. \nGenocide affects more than those people involved in the conflict. The lives of young people born in Rwanda after 1994\, for example\, were forever changed by the genocide. They felt themselves victims of something that none of them had created. \nMarc wants to show these young people that they can either choose to be prisoners of that history and always see themselves in its light\, or they can take a stand and ensure history doesn’t repeat itself. \nIn 2009 he initiated Walk to Remember\, an international education programme based in Rwanda which is followed in over ten countries. The programme educates and mobilises youth to fight against genocide. \nHow did he come up with the idea? Marc explained: \n“It was a Wednesday\, after facilitating a program called ‘Forgiveness: A Step Towards Reconciliation’ within the Peace and Love Proclaimer initiative. I realised that we often say the words ‘Never Again’ and it struck me that we had taken insufficient action to transform these words into meaningful actions.” \n“It bothered me so much so I thought\, why not do walks so that people could always ask why we walk and hence keep the memory of what happened. When we forget\, we reap the fruit of forgetfulness and hence repeat the same mistakes. \n“This concern weighed heavily on my mind\, prompting me to consider the idea of organising a significant gathering of individuals. I envisioned a collective event where people could come together in unity and\, when approached by curious onlookers\, we could openly share our raison d’etre. My intention was to create something impactful and attention-grabbing\, a platform that would naturally invite questions and discussion. I firmly believe that\, by commemorating and preserving the memory of past events\, we can help prevent the repetition of historical mistakes that result from forgetfulness.” \nWalk to Remember now brings together young people from all over the world to end mass atrocities. The walk has taken place in 25 countries around the world and has been attended by heads of states and diplomats including dignitaries such as Paul Kagame\, President of Rwanda. \nIn 2013\, Marc and Andrew Fearn founded the Aegis Youth Champion Leadership Program in Rwanda\, where children of survivors and perpetrators have to live together. Marc has worked with over 2\,300 individuals\, including those in active conflict\, enabling them to become role models and powerful voices of humanity in their communities. \nHe has led programs in places of extreme conflict\, such as South Sudan\, Central\nAfrican Republic and Adamawa (north eastern Nigeria). Marc is a powerful voice of humanity who has trained in South Africa\, Zambia\, Cook County Jail (Chicago\, USA)\, Gambia\, Uganda\, Kenya and his native Rwanda. \nMarc currently heads the international training and education program at Aegis Trust\, where he imparts valuable knowledge on peace and values education to a diverse audience from both local and international communities. Furthermore\, Marc has had the privilege to lecture at renowned institutions such as Harvard Law School\, Tufts University\, William and Mary\, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington\, among others. \nThe doors of St Mary’s Guildhall will open at 6pm on 10 November when light refreshments will be available. Marc’s talk starts at 7pm. \n“We advise people to book their seats in advance\,” said Paul Maddocks\, Chair of Coventry Lord Mayor’s Committee for Peace and Reconciliation which is organising the event. “Otherwise they may find themselves standing at the back of the hall which we would like to avoid.” \nTo book seats\, use the form at \nMarc’s visit to Coventry will be generously funded by Coventry University’s Centre for Trust\, Peace and Social Relations.

DESCRIPTION:On 28 October\, Warwick District UNA will host a talk by Matilda Dunn\, Research Graduate: Faculty of Natural Sciences\, Imperial College\, London on the subject of \nBiodiversity – why are we losing it and how can we save it?\nIt will be held in Leamington Spa Baptist Church (Warwick Hall)\, Chandos Street\, CV32 4RN from 12:15 to 14:00. Please feel free to bring your own lunches. Tea/coffee/biscuits will be provided. \nIt will also be available online. Join the Zoom Meeting here \nMatilda Dunn is a PhD student in the Centre for Environmental Policy investigating the environmental dimensions of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She is interested in how environmental issues underpin the delivery of the SDGs as a whole\, as well as how biodiversity outcomes are currently integrated within the UN Systems. This work aims to provide a set of recommendations to achieve greater synergy\, collaboration and coherence in the UN system’s work on the environment to support the delivery of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Previously\, Matilda was based in the Interdisciplinary Centre for Conservation Science group at the University of Oxford where she focussed on research surrounding behaviour change interventions\, impact evaluations and illegal wildlife trade. She holds an MSc with distinction in Conservation Science from Imperial College London and a BSc first-class honours in Zoology from the University of Exeter. \nMatilda will focus on how human activities that threatens biodiversity – such as burning fossil fuels and industrialized farming\, have combined to dramatically impact the planet’s biomes and ecosystems. Climate change\, deforestation\, and pollution have destroyed or damaged habitats\, changed where species live and eliminated species at a speed and scale comparable to major extinction events of the past. Humanity relies on the earth’s natural systems to regulate the environment and maintain a habitable planet. \nIn December 2022 the Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity (COP15) agreed to a new Global Biodiversity Framework with a vision to live in harmony with nature by 2050. That provides a strategic plan for a collective effort among nations to affect transformative change. \nThe world is making some progress towards preserving biodiversity. In 2023 a new High Seas Treaty agreed to place 30 per cent of the seas into protected areas by 2030 to safeguard and regenerate marine nature.–

SUMMARY:International Migration - World in Crises
DESCRIPTION:On 30 September\, Warwick District UN Association will host Jonas Kaufmann from Essex University who will address the meeting on the current issues relating to \nInternational Migration – World in Crises\nMigration has become such a toxic issue within the UK and Europe with each nation vying to protect their borders from a large influx of migrants by either introducing draconian measures or by legislation e.g. The UK`s Illegal Migration Bill has become law and this legislation is central to the UK government`s pledge to stop small boats crossing the English Channel. The number of boats carrying migrants from North Africa across the Mediterranean is growing fast – but Europe is struggling to come to terms with this mass movement of people. Tunisia in North Africa is now the launch pad for the majority of migrants who take the risk-laden journey across the Mediterranean Sea. \nThe patterns of the flow of people between countries are widely influenced by international economic\, political and cultural interrelations. International economic disparities\, poverty and environmental degradation\, combined with the absence of peace and security and human rights violations are all factors affecting international migration. \nThe meeting will take place on Saturday 30 September 2023 from 12:15 pm to 2 pm (meeting starts at 12:30 prompt) at Leamington Spa Baptist Church (Warwick Hall)\, Chandos Street\, CV32 4RN. \nThis is a Hybrid meeting both on-line and in-person. Please feel free to bring your own lunches. Tea/coffee/biscuits will be provided. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81206953951?pwd=aWVZYnhKTVdLK3VYcnF2SkRYdUhtQT09 \nMeeting ID: 812 0695 3951\nPasscode: 204554 \nGuest Speaker: Jonas Kaufmann\, Research Academic\, University of Essex and University of Oxford \nJonas is currently pursuing his PhD at the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex and working as a Researcher at the Department of International Development at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on the integration of minorities and immigrants in Western Europe. He previously worked in research positions at the EU Asylum Agency\, the Refugee Studies Centre in Oxford\, as well as at a public policy consultancy. Before embarking on his research career\, Jonas worked as a Legal Adviser to refugees and asylum seekers at NGOs in Egypt and Switzerland.

SUMMARY:International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2023
DESCRIPTION:Scoring for People and the Planet\nThe International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP)\, which takes place annually on 6 April\, presents an opportunity to recognize the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and in people’s lives across the globe. \nSport has the power to change the world; it is a fundamental right and a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and promote sustainable development and peace\, as well as solidarity and respect for all. The day presents an opportunity to recognize the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and in people’s lives across the globe. \nThe global theme for the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2023 is “Scoring for People and the Planet”. As in previous years\, this overarching theme allows for IDSDP activities to broadly focus around the impact and influence of sport on sustainable development and peace. \nFrom empowering women and girls\, young people\, persons with disabilities\, and other marginalized groups to advancing health\, sustainability\, and education objectives\, sport offers tremendous potential for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and for promoting peace and human rights. The United Nations has long recognized the power and universality of sport\, using it to unite individuals and groups through supporting sport for development efforts\, participating in events from the global to the grassroots level\, and developing its own sports-related campaigns and initiatives. \nMore information at https://www.un.org/en/observances/sport-day and at https://social.desa.un.org/issues/sport-for-development-and-peace/international-day-of-sports-for-development-and-peace \nThe day is promoted by United Nations Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD).

SUMMARY:Has the UN Security Council failed?
DESCRIPTION:On 25 February Warwick District UN Association will host a hybrid meeting featuring a talk by Mr Samuel Jarvis entitled \nHas the UN Security Council failed in its role of fulfilling its primary responsibility for peace and security? \nThe event will be held online and live at Warwick Room\, Leamington Spa Baptist Church\, Chandos Street\, Leamington Spa CV32 4RN. \nFormat of the meeting : \n12:15 pm – 12:30 pm – Zoom opens for social chat. Tea/coffee/biscuits will be available. Attendees may want to bring their own lunch.\n12:30 pm – Prompt start of meeting and introduction etc.\n12:30 – 1:15/30 – Samuel will address meeting\n1:15 pm – 1:45 pm – Q & A Session from the floor.\nClear up and leave building by 2:00 pm. \nJoin Zoom Meeting by following this link or use the meeting ID: 865 9358 6379 and Passcode: 109311 \nSamuel Jarvis\nHe is a Lecturer in International Relations at York St John University and has previously worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds and as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton. He is author of “The Limits of Common Humanity: Motivating the Responsibility to Protect in a Changing Global Order” published by McGill Queen’s University Press in 2022. His latest research focuses on the political dynamics of the UN Security Council and in particular\, the evolution of the UN Security Council’s response to new and emerging threats to international peace and security. \nHe has previously worked on a British Academy funded project that explored the UK’s role and reputation as a permanent member of the UN Security Council after the decision to leave the European Union. The project examined how the UK’s status and diplomacy as a permanent member were perceived by other members of the UN Security Council. This research fed into broader debates concerning the UK’s role in peacekeeping\, international development and international security\, following the decision to leave the EU. He co-authored the report “Global Britain in the United Nations” which was launched in Westminster by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the United Nations and was covered by media outlets including the Guardian and the Economist. \nSamuel will speak on the current challenges facing the UN Security Council in light of one of its permanent members invading Ukraine and the fallout from the on-going conflict. What effect has this had on the authority of the Council and its deliberations? Has Russia`s actions in Ukraine further weakened the Council – given the fact that it has always received very poor publicity because of its veto power? How is the role of the UN perceived in the current international climate – has it any legitimacy or influence in resolving ongoing issues e.g in Yemen\, Mali\, DRC\, Syria\, Sudan and Ethiopia? Has the international community\, especially the UN failed to bring about just peace and security in these areas of conflict? In response to these key questions\, Samuel will take stock of the Council’s overall performance in 2022 and reflect on the key challenges the Security Council faces in the coming months.

SUMMARY:Rally & vigil in support of Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:UNA Shropshire will be running a rally in support of Ukraine and Shropshire-based refugees from 10:30 – 12:30 on 24 February 2023 in the presence of Shropshire’s Lord Lieutenant Anna Turner. There will be a one minute silent vigil at 11:00. The rally will include a visual display and a survey asking people ‘Should the Russian Federation be suspended from the UN ? ‘ \nIt will be held in the main Church Stretton Car Park\, across the road from the Coop store\, Easthope Road\, Church Stretton\, Shropshire\, SY6 6BL \nDavid Oliver\, President of United Nations Association Shropshire\, said: “365 days of intensive\, deadly\, destructive and destabilising aggression against the sovereign territory and people of Ukraine by the Putin driven Russian Federation must end. The more free world must commit all that is necessary to secure a just peace which gives no ground to the aggressor. We shall welcome all in support of a just peace and especially our King’s representative\, Shropshire’s Lord Lieutenant Anna Turner.” \nJohn Crowe\, Coordinator of UNA Shropshire said “As most people appreciate\, this war will end sometime but a just peace must be secured soonest. The human costs in so very many lost\, wasted lives\, bereft families\, a ocean of displaced humans\, and vast community devastation demands an end to this violent aggression. \n“Alongside the enormity of the human costs across Ukraine\, the destruction to the pacific ‘world order’ and ‘international normality’ stalks all our futures in too may theatres. An audit of the UN’s 77 years would show some success in conflict avoidance and peace settlements yet also\, way too much failure which darkens our news feeds almost constantly. I should say ‘The UN delivers in part but\, nowhere near good enough because the UN charter’s first obligation to maintain peace and security is found to be wanting – repeatedly in Ukraine right now and elsewhere too’. This realisation gives rise to people asking if the UN should be reformed or replaced ? \n“Our present concentration must be to secure end to this war in Europe and support all those impacted. Our history is being written each day !” \nFurther information: John Crowe\, 07851 760443\, unashropshire.org.uk
